Hello all, and welcome to Writer’s Syndrome. We appreciate you joining and hope you enjoy your time here. For all of those not in the know, this site is all about roleplaying. If you don’t know what that is or how to roleplay, or you just want to refresh yourself if you’re like me and are just getting back into the roleplaying scene, fear not, for this guide is here to ensure that you know all the basics of roleplaying.
Roleplaying is playing or acting out roles to model a situation. It is a psychological technique used to model behavior, but here at Writer’s Syndrome, we have no interest in studying behavior, so we just use the first part of that definition. Roleplaying for fun comes in two main flavors, one using paragraphs and the other being written more like a script. The first is generally the more common one, and is written in the style of an actual book or paper. So take that into account when roleplaying. The second is generally reserved for very dialogue oriented roleplays. Both require, to some extent, proper grammar, but it’s much more of a deal in the first type. See the below examples if you’re still confused.
Example 1:
The accepted leader of their group sat down on the stage. He smiled as he looked around the room to see everyone mingling and waiting for the real meeting to begin. Hmm....... I wonder if Memphis made it... And does he remember what to do...? Curiouser and curiouser. Sam shook his head ever so slightly. No matter. If he forgot, that's his deal. He'll remember in due time. He stood up, and the room quieted. "Welcome." he said smoothly, "The time has come upon us once again to make a strike on the light. There is a light district on the west side of town. It was left relatively unguarded and should be quite easy to sack." He smiled darkly. "There is also a... person of interest residing in that district. I want her captured. Under any circumstance. As long as she is alive." It's time for her redemption. "Memphis shall be your leader on this attack. I expect success." He stepped aside and someone else started talking about future attacks and hostage situations. Hmm... If all goes well.... We'll have a very strong addition to our forces... His wicked smile returned.
Example 2:
Wave: HI EVERYONE!
No one wants you here, Wave. -_- <-- (When no character is specified, it is implied that the roleplayer is speaking)
Fang: *flies in circles*
Shadow: *rolls on the ground*
As mentioned above, grammar is a very important part of roleplaying. I, being Writer’s Syndrome’s friendly neighborhood Grammar Nazi, do tend to correct others if they make a rather glaring error, but that’s only because I write a lot. Proper grammar includes, but is not limited to: capitalization, punctuation, correct spelling, and proper syntax (basically proper sentence structure).
Although we here at Writer’s Syndrome want roleplaying to be a fun time, there are rules that need to be followed. All of the above still applies, but in addition, we ask that you do not make any character ridiculously overpowered, a practice known commonly as “godmodding”. Also, please respect the opinions of others and what they post. Not everything is going to go the way that you plan it, and that is one of the reasons why roleplaying is fun. Please refer to the official Rules and Regulations list if you have any questions.
I hope that this guide has brought you up to speed on roleplaying, and I hope that you enjoy your time here at Writer’s Syndrome.
